The owner hated to process, but I loved it!!! It's easy to convert. I used to work for a small commercial company that did this on the side. If you have any other questions, let me know.
Though be careful, as I have heard that some places will not even attempt to scan brittle films. If they're not in great condition, I would highly recommend having professionals take care of it. Lastly, what condition is your film in? Are they at all brittle or at risk of breaking? If you have a film projector, running the film through it would be a good way of testing this, as the tension it undergoes in a projector is similar to if not greater than the tension it undergoes during scanning. So if you want them to look as they were shot, you would have to convert the frame rates afterwards in an editing software. Also, if it matters to you, the $300 scanner scans everything at 30fps, which is not the native frame rate of 8mm or Super 8. (You could also probably do it yourself post-conversion with color grading software.) Is your film positive or reversal print? In my experience, reversal film is a bit more dense and requires more light to pass through it during the scanning process in order for it to look most natural, which a cheap scanner might not be able to accomplish.

Are your films in color or black & white? If color, do they show signs of color fade? A professional digitization process could address this issue. It also cannot do sound (though I'm assuming that all of these films are silent unless your family was really fancy with their home movies). But after looking them over, I think the answer to your question depends on a couple of different things.įirst, how important is quality? I noticed that the $300 kit listed on Amazon has max resolution of 720p. I am by no means an expert on the topic (I was trained to do a job a specific way), and I have also never used the commercial conversion kits that you speak of here. We did not do conversions for individual clients, we performed digital archiving for larger entities (mostly universities or large private collections), so I can't say that I know how the process differs on a commercial scale, but I have personally scanned dozens of 8mm and Super 8 home movies.
I used to work at a film digitization company, so I do know a little bit about the process.
